Plein Air in the Sun

We went after a busy Sunday morning to the open invitation to paint on the grounds at ElMaro Vineyard.  There is a market every Sunday in June.

Painting

It is spring so the vines have leafed out but there was no fruit yet. I liked the lines of the vines in rows, supported by posts and wires. An Elmaro employee said these were well established Marquette vines. The University of Minnesota has developed a number of varietals for cold climates. My view is that Wisconsin whites can be quite good. I’ve been spoiled by trips to Sonoma and Napa, so the reds here need time.

The challenge was capturing all the green on green colors. When I revisit I’ll try emphasizing the differences.

Late stage

I used some ink at the end to define the closer leaves.  I think it would be interesting to revisit in the Fall when the leaves turn to more vivid colors.

Grape vines are not raw nature, but show years of human tinkering, and every vine here is spliced on to native root stock.

Framed

I’ll be back on June 30 if you want to visit. I can paint and chat.
