Makeshift Studio

It helps to paint or draw daily, and so I set up my box easel in the dining room by a west facing window. I will be working on some pieces from Trempeleau Reserve for the At ists along the Trail show at Elmaro Vineyard. I’m coordinating the artists this year. We have 21 participating Continue reading

Hawks Delight

ORA, Outdoor Recreation Association, has opened a new property in the West edge of La Crosse, on State Road. This farmland will be developed into a place for trails. Painters with the Between the Bluffs event met here to paint together. It was fun to see what caught the eye of the dozen or so Continue reading

There is a Plein Air event at Trempeleau National Wildlife Reserve that includes an invitation to paint at Elmaro Vineyard which is nearby. Here is the poster for 2025 Last year it was raining, but we artists persisted either from the shelter of our cars, or by umbrella or canopy. Watercolor in the rain is Continue reading

Cliffwood Bluff

Between the Bluffs is an annual Plein Air event located in a 15 mile radius of downtown La Crosse. I first participated in 2023 and did a series of bluff paintings. Community Trail Farm

ORA is an organization that preserves land and creates trails. We met on this farmland for an afternoon. There are some barns and other structures here. But I liked the grass path through fields with receding lines of trees. The sky was gray and foreboding, but the hawks were riding the wind. I like the Continue reading

Autumn Glory

We’ve planted a number of plants since moving to La Crosse two years ago. One is a serviceberry tree. I set up on our front yard and tried again with Plein Air acrylics. At least water was easily available. The background is a fade from blue to burned umber with some lavender. I used an Continue reading

Acrylic Plein Air

Acrylic Plein Air is a trip. It tends to dry on the pallet, but takes its time on the canvas. It ended up sort of Seurat adjacent. It was at least a nice day in nature. I’ll submit three, not sure if it will make the cut. Continue reading
