The Letter Bee

I’ve been asked to participate in a show with the theme of Resonance: What idea struck with a resonance that endures.

Belgic Confession Cal DeWitt, biologist and environmentalist referenced this quote in a lecture on the spirituality of John Muir. This reference to the Belgic Confession is a statement of two books theology.
My artwork appears under the name Two Book Reflections. The idea continues to resonate with me.

The Letter Bee This image is from a photo taken on a Bumble Bee survey with Dane County Parks. The bees are very fond of asters.
Consider the complexity of a bee: how it flies, where it lives, how it pollenates, why it likes asters.
The show will be at Christ Presbyterian Church in Madison starting July 7.

Plein Air in the Sun

We went after a busy Sunday morning to the open invitation to paint on the grounds at ElMaro Vineyard. There is a market every Sunday in June.

Painting It is spring so the vines have leafed out but there was no fruit yet. I liked the lines of the vines in rows, supported by posts and wires. An Elmaro employee said these were well established Marquette vines. The University of Minnesota has developed a number of varietals for cold climates. My view is that Wisconsin whites can be quite good. I’ve been spoiled by trips to Sonoma and Napa, so the reds here need time.
The challenge was capturing all the green on green colors. When I revisit I’ll try emphasizing the differences.

Late stage I used some ink at the end to define the closer leaves. I think it would be interesting to revisit in the Fall when the leaves turn to more vivid colors.
Grape vines are not raw nature, but show years of human tinkering, and every vine here is spliced on to native root stock.

Framed I’ll be back on June 30 if you want to visit. I can paint and chat.

Credo

At a year long church study we were encouraged to make a personal statement of our faith. I wrote and created a triptych of three acrylic paintings depicting creation, redemption and renewal.

It is good
It is finished
It is new It expresses the phrase from the church fathers, that “all the works of God are undivided.” God as Father, Son and Spirit is united in work and being.

Painting in the rain

It was raining for the Plein Air event on Saturday, so I brought a canopy. That helped but the added moisture gave the watercolors a life of their own. The result was a soft effect. Since the water did not dry as normal it was hard to know what would happen.
This is at Red Pine Creek dike at the Trempeleau National Wildlife Refuge.
Trempeleau means “feet in the water” from a longer French title for “The Mountain with its feet in the water.” It fit this day

At ElMaro Vineyard

In the gallery As part of Artists on the Trail at Trempeleau National Wildlife Refuge, several artists have refuge art on display through June 30.
Some of us will be painting in the Vineyard on Sundays in June. I’ll be there June 2 and 30.

Lavender clematis
Maroon clematis
Jacob’s Ladder We’ve lived here long enough to be in our second Spring. Each of these flowers are a wonder. What adaption explains the amount of lavender color, following so much white in the spring.
Of course these are plants with signs of human impact. We are made of dirt ourselves, Adam means as much. So of course we garden, and tinker.
How can paint capture the light edges of the maroon blossom? I’ll have to explore.
What’s outside of your house today?

Wandering, I saw this

Along Lake Mendota is this weather stressed tree. Great interest in shape and on the roots. Clearly it embodies persistence.

Maybe a nice acrylic project.
