Young vine

Updated. I started this Plein Air at Elmaro, but tossed it aside. I took it home and restarted it with a photo reference. Vines have lots of details to get lost in, for example leaf veins and vine tendrils. The cloud probably looks like Mt. Rainier from my home state. Acrylic paint on a gessoed Continue reading

Elmaro Plein Air #2

I was trying Golden Open acrylic slow drying paint. In sunny and windy conditions it dried fairly fast on the pallet, but slower on the board I used. Here is my unfinished product. I’ll work in it at home to later the multiple green tones. When is Plein Air not? This is the piece after Continue reading

Experiencing Faith

I’m leading the last of four classes that have church members express their responses to word and worship visually. We have had a pitter, card maker and painted stones. I’ll be suggesting listening for an idea, phrase or image that strikes the participant and then expressing that on a small canvas in acrylic paint. Here Continue reading

Autumn Glory

We’ve planted a number of plants since moving to La Crosse two years ago. One is a serviceberry tree. I set up on our front yard and tried again with Plein Air acrylics. At least water was easily available. The background is a fade from blue to burned umber with some lavender. I used an Continue reading

Acrylic Plein Air

Acrylic Plein Air is a trip. It tends to dry on the pallet, but takes its time on the canvas. It ended up sort of Seurat adjacent. It was at least a nice day in nature. I’ll submit three, not sure if it will make the cut. Continue reading

Mayfly

I saw them on the windows at my gym. Their design is quite sporty, especially the twin tails. If my identification is correct they were Hexagenia limbata, or giant mayfly. I took a picture at a local store, where a living and a deceased mayfly had come to rest. It looked like a good acrylic Continue reading

The Letter Bee

I’ve been asked to participate in a show with the theme of Resonance: What idea struck with a resonance that endures. Cal DeWitt, biologist and environmentalist referenced this quote in a lecture on the spirituality of John Muir. This reference to the Belgic Confession is a statement of two books theology. My artwork appears under Continue reading

Credo

At a year long church study we were encouraged to make a personal statement of our faith. I wrote and created a triptych of three acrylic paintings depicting creation, redemption and renewal. It expresses the phrase from the church fathers, that “all the works of God are undivided.” God as Father, Son and Spirit is Continue reading
